Edinburg, TX: The City of Edinburg and the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library invite the public to the unveiling of the Boulevard of Heroes. This special event is scheduled for Friday, November 8, starting at 10:00 a.m. at the Sekula Memorial Library located at 1906 S. Closner Blvd. right across from the historic Echo Hotel.
The Boulevard of Heroes project aims to keep our City’s heroes in the minds and hearts of all our residents by installing portrait murals of our most recent fallen heroes along Closner Blvd between The Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library & the County Courthouse for phase 1 of this project. Guidelines for the selection of additional Edinburg Fallen Heroes will be created and published in 2020.
During this special event, the portraits of the City of Edinburg’s two Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, Sgt. Alfredo “Freddy” Gonzalez and Pvt. Pedro Cano along with the paintings of the City’s most recent Fallen Heroes, Lance Cpl. Dustin Michael Sekula, Spc. Mark Anthony Zapata, Sgt. Christopher Ramirez, Lance Cpl. Benito A. Ramirez and Lance Cpl. Derek Hernandez will be unveiled along each traffic light intersection of Closner Boulevard.
The ceremony will commence inside the library with a special ceremony, following the service, the families will proceed north on Closner as each family unveils the portrait of their loved one. The portraits will be unveiled before this year’s Veteran’s Day Parade so that all who attend can see the paintings and remember and honor them.
