Memorial Day Commemorative Ceremony

Proudly recognized by the Texas Legislature as a Hometown of Heroes, the City of Edinburg invites the community to come together in solemn remembrance during its Memorial Day Commemorative Ceremony, scheduled for Friday, May 23, 2025, at 10 a.m. at the Edinburg Municipal Auditorium, located at 200 N. 7th Street, just behind Edinburg City Hall.

The ceremony will honor the courageous men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the United States. The program will feature stirring musical tributes, moments of reflection, and a symbolic presentation of the Battlefield Cross by the Edinburg High School JROTC Honor Guard, under the direction of SFC (Ret.) Micaela Reyes. Each element of the program will serve as a heartfelt tribute to the bravery, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of our nation’s fallen heroes.

In a deeply meaningful gesture, members of American Legion Post 408 will read the names of Edinburg’s fallen heroes—from World War I through the most recent conflicts—ensuring their service and sacrifice are never forgotten. The City extends a special invitation to the families of Edinburg’s 90 fallen service members, whose loved ones gave their lives in service to the nation. Their presence will help underscore the true cost of freedom and reflect the community’s profound gratitude.

The ceremony will also include a moment of silence in memory of Mrs. Dolia Gonzalez, the beloved mother of Edinburg's own Medal of Honor recipient, Sgt. Alfredo “Freddy” Gonzalez. Mrs. Gonzalez, a symbol of resilience and grace, leaves behind a legacy that continues to inspire future generations.

“Memorial Day is a sacred time for our community to come together, reflect, and honor those who gave everything for our freedom,” said Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. “As a Hometown of Heroes, Edinburg carries both the responsibility and the privilege of ensuring that the memory of our fallen endures.”

This event is free and open to the public. Veterans, military families, students, and civic organizations are especially encouraged to attend.

Let us gather to remember. Let us gather to honor. Let us never forget.
